Semen Collection: the stallion mounts a dummy, which imitates size and shape of a mare. The stallion’s semen is collected by using an artificial vagina specially developed for this purpose.
Semen Preparation: the semen is taken to the laboratory where it is prepared to be used fresh, cooled or frozen. For all these uses, the semen is first examined under microscope and by other methods, which establish its quality. After these evaluations, several substances are added to the semen to assist in the preservation of its qualities.
Cooling: The semen is collected from the stallion and cooled down to 5 oC (41 oF) in an adequate container. This method assures de semen’s quality during 48 hours, enabling its transportation to any location in Brazil. This enables the breeder to use de service of stallions that are geographically distant from his mares.
Freezing: In this case, the semen is frozen and preserved for an undetermined time in a cylinder containing liquid nitrogen at a temperature of 196 oC below zero (minus 320 oF). This allows for international trade of semen, enabling breeders to use the best stallions from all over the world, or else for the export of semen of Brazilian stallions.
